Where to Stay in Hoi An: Ancient Town, An Bang Beach or Da Nang?

Where to Stay in Hoi An: Ancient Town, An Bang Beach or Da Nang?
Planning a trip to Central Vietnam and wondering where to stay in Hoi An? Should you stay near Hoi An Ancient Town, relax at An Bang Beach, or stay in Da Nang and visit Hoi An as a day trip? As a local team based in Hoi An, here’s our simple guide.

Hoi An Ancient Town – Best for First-Time Visitors

For your first visit, staying near Hoi An Ancient Town is usually the easiest choice.

You’ll be close to restaurants, cafés, markets, tailor shops, lantern streets and the night market. In the evening, you can simply walk into town without worrying about transport.

Best for: first-time visitors, couples, food lovers, shopping and evening atmosphere.

Local tip: You don’t need to stay right inside the busiest part of the Old Town. Areas just outside the centre can be quieter while still being within easy walking or cycling distance.

An Bang Beach – Best for Relaxing

If you prefer a slower holiday, An Bang Beach is a lovely option.

There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and beach bars nearby, while Hoi An Ancient Town is only a short drive away.

Best for: beach lovers, couples, longer stays and travellers looking for a relaxed atmosphere.

Local tip: If you’re already spending several days in Phu Quoc or another beach destination, consider staying closer to Hoi An Ancient Town for a different experience.

Da Nang – Best for Beach & City Life

Choose Da Nang if you prefer modern hotels, beach resorts, rooftop bars, restaurants and city life.

The My Khe Beach area is popular with visitors and is also convenient for exploring Marble Mountains, Son Tra Peninsula and Ba Na Hills.

Hoi An is close enough for a day trip, but staying overnight in Hoi An lets you experience the Ancient Town after sunset when the lanterns come on.

Should You Split Your Stay?

If you only have 2–3 nights, choose either Hoi An or Da Nang rather than changing hotels.

If you have 4–6 nights, splitting your stay can work well:

2–3 nights Da Nang + 2–3 nights Hoi An

Or simply use Hoi An as your base and visit Da Nang on a day trip.

How Long Should You Stay in Hoi An?

For most first-time visitors, 3 nights in Hoi An is a good starting point.

You’ll have time for the Ancient Town, local food, An Bang Beach and perhaps a day trip to My Son Sanctuary, Marble Mountains or Da Nang.

If you enjoy slow travel, 4–5 nights is definitely not too long.

Our Local Recommendation

Choose Hoi An Ancient Town for culture, food and evening atmosphere.

Choose An Bang Beach for relaxation and beach life.

Choose Da Nang for modern hotels, beaches and nightlife.

There’s no wrong choice — they simply offer different experiences.

Is Hai Van Pass Worth Visiting? A Complete Travel Guide from Hoi An to Hue

If you are planning to travel between Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue, the Hai Van Pass is worth considering as part of your Central Vietnam itinerary. Instead of taking the fastest route, you can turn the journey into a scenic experience with spectacular mountain, coastline and lagoon views. What Is Hai Van Pass? Hai Van Pass is a famous mountain pass connecting Da Nang and Hue in Central Vietnam. The road climbs over the Hai Van Mountain Range and offers panoramic views of the South China Sea, Lang Co Bay and the surrounding mountains. For travelers going from Hoi An to Hue, the Hai Van Pass is one of the most popular scenic routes in Vietnam. Is Hai Van Pass Worth Visiting? Yes, especially if you enjoy scenic drives, photography and natural landscapes. The journey provides an opportunity to see several attractions in one day, including: Hai Van Pass viewpoint – Enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and mountains. Lang Co Bay – A beautiful coastal area located on the northern side of the pass. Lap An Lagoon – A peaceful lagoon surrounded by mountains, particularly attractive for photography. Hai Van Pass coastal viewpoints – Several viewpoints along the mountain road offer impressive views of the coastline. If the weather is clear, the views from Hai Van Pass can be particularly impressive. Best Ways to Travel Through Hai Van Pass There are several ways to travel between Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue. Hoi An to Hue by Private Car A private car from Hoi An to Hue via Hai Van Pass is one of the most convenient options for families, couples and small groups. The main advantage is flexibility. You can choose your departure time and stop at Hai Van Pass, Lang Co Bay and Lap An Lagoon for sightseeing and photos. A private car is particularly useful if you want to make the journey part of your sightseeing itinerary rather than simply getting from Hoi An to Hue. Da Nang to Hue by Train The Da Nang to Hue train is another popular option, especially for travelers who want to enjoy the scenery without driving. The railway route passes along the coast and Hai Van Mountain, offering beautiful views from the train. However, the train is primarily transportation rather than a sightseeing tour, so you will have less flexibility to stop at viewpoints such as Lang Co Bay or Lap An Lagoon. Hoi An to Hue by Bus Taking a bus is generally a straightforward and budget-friendly way to travel between Hoi An and Hue. However, buses usually offer less flexibility than a private car, particularly if you want to stop for sightseeing along Hai Van Pass. How Long Does It Take from Hoi An to Hue? The journey from Hoi An to Hue takes several hours depending on the transportation option, traffic and sightseeing stops. If you travel by private car via Hai Van Pass, it is better to allow extra time because you may want to stop at several viewpoints and attractions along the way. For this reason, many travelers treat Hoi An to Hue via Hai Van Pass as a sightseeing transfer, rather than a simple point-to-point journey. What Is the Best Way to See Hai Van Pass? The best option depends on your travel style. Choose a private car if you want flexibility, hotel-to-hotel transportation and the opportunity to stop for photos. Choose the train if you prefer a scenic railway journey and do not need sightseeing stops. Choose the bus if your priority is keeping transportation simple and affordable.

Grab, Taxi or Private Car with an English Speaking Driver in Vietnam: Which One Should You Choose?

Grab, Taxi or Private Car with an English Speaking Driver in Vietnam: Which One Should You Choose? Planning a trip to Da Nang, Hoi An, or Hue? One of the first decisions you'll make is how to get around. While Grab and traditional taxis are convenient for short trips, a private car with an English speaking driver offers a completely different travel experience. Here's a simple comparison to help you choose the best option for your trip. 1. Grab – Best for Short, Simple Trips Grab is the most popular ride hailing app in Vietnam and works similarly to Uber. Pros Affordable for short distances Easy to book through the app Cash and card payment options Widely available in Da Nang and major tourist areas Cons Driver usually speaks very limited English Difficult to communicate special requests Not ideal for sightseeing or multiple stops Longer waiting times during peak hours or rainy weather Availability may be limited in rural areas or late at night Best for: Airport transfers, restaurant visits, shopping, and short city rides. 2. Traditional Taxi – Easy but Less Predictable Taxi companies are available throughout Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue. Pros Easy to find at airports, hotels, and tourist attractions No app required Suitable for direct point to point transportation Cons English communication is often limited Prices may vary depending on traffic Less flexible for sightseeing Some smaller taxi companies may not accept international credit cards Best for: Quick transportation when you don't want to use an app.
